Naturally Pungent Materials Protect Wood and Wood Products
USDA Forest Service -
The US Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, recently completed an extended informal field test using ECS -1 and ECT - 101 Plus. They found the two wood sealants, which had been fortified with a food grade extract of chile pepper, helped deter the damage typically caused by porcupines, woodpeckers, chipmunks, horses and other mammals. The report from that study is posted on their web site and available for your review.

Extensive research has determined the natural ingredients found in
EcoCote products can deter damage from termites.

Texas A+M University -
A laboratory bio-assay study conducted at the Center for Urban and Structural Entomology at Texas A&M University established that both Formosa and subterranean termites are repelled when encountering wood coated with materials containing the active ingredient. "... the insects fled the area and stayed away ..." , said Dr. Grady Glenn, Senior Researcher at the Center.

Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) -
The Australian government's premier entomological research team conducted extensive bio-assay studies followed by a comprehensive eight month field study involving EcoCote's ECT-201 pressure treating product. Study results concluded that EcoCote's eco-friendly formulation enriched with a food grade extract of chile pepper "are particularly encouraging" in protecting softwood timbers. See the Executive Summary and Conclusions.

Forest and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) -
Japan's FFPRI also conducted an extensive laboratory bio-assay study and is soon to complete the first year of a two year field study. The bio-assay study was very promising and the interim report (after six months) from the field study is quite encouraging. The one year report will be listed here when available.

Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees sometimes have an aggressive nature around people but are most noted for the round holes they bore into wooden trim near eaves and gables of homes, facia boards, porch ceilings, outdoor wooden furniture, decks, railings, fence posts, telephone poles, siding, shingles and other weathered wood. Initial damage is minor but, over time, considerable damage, including structural damage can be caused.

Rich Mountain Wood Protection Services of Gulfport, MS conducted a two year study to determine the efficacy of our oleoresin capsicum as an active ingredient in deterring the damage of the Carpenter Bee. Conclusions reached in this practical evaluation include that the treatment successfully deterred damage by the bees and "was definitely worth doing".
See Executive Summary of the report.

Anti-Foul Applications

  1. A US Geological Survey scientific instrument positioned in a tributary of Lake Michigan was so encrusted with Zebra Mussels that it became inoperable.
  2. The instrument was removed from the water, cleaned and coated with materials from EcoCote International containing ChileGard®. The instrument was then resubmerged.
  3. After 15 months the instrument is observed to have very few mussels attached and those appear to have been as a "bridge from untreated areas". Note the mussel attachment on the cable which was not treated.

Other Tests of Active ingrediants in EcoCote products:
In addition to the tests on termites, Carpenter Bees and the various species found in forests and on farms and ranches, the natural pungency of EcoCote's food grade extract of chile pepper has also been found to be effective in cities, towns and suburbia. Squirrels and other rodents, dogs, deer, ants and many other insects typically avoid the pungency present in chile pepper. An anecdotal study in Kenya demonstrated that even elephants and baboons dislike the pungent taste of chile. Snakes don't like the presence of chile pepper and most marine creatures will not attach to coatings containing the extract.

Lubricants and Coorosion Control
EcoCote lanolin based products have been tested by independent, third party, university engineering labs and have proven to be superior in lubrication and corrosion control when compared with many of the chemical based products currently on the market.
  • The new PL-60 High Performance lubricant tested at high levels of ASTM standards on the Fallex and Four Ball Wear tests conducted by the University of Queensland. The product is most appropriate for agricultural, mining and other heavy duty off-road equipment.

  • ECI's General Purpose (GP) lubricant provides similar corrosion control and lubrication qualities and is a mainstay for home, shop, office and recreational applications. Outdoor enthusiasts can trust EcoCote products for their hunting, fishing, camping and boating applications.
